Tender roast beef, crisp potatoes and a cauliflower cheese worth ordering on the side: Sunday lunch at The Jane Eyre in Chorlton gave us plenty of reasons to return.
On Beech Road, this neighbourhood bar and restaurant has an established reputation for Sunday roasts. Manchester’s Finest highlighted that reputation when reporting on its expansion into Chorlton. Our visit lived up to it.
The ham hock terrine with green sauce, cornichon and crouton was a satisfying start. Its substantial, meaty texture was balanced by the sauce’s bright acidity, while crisp croutons brought a welcome crunch. Those contrasts kept the dish from feeling too heavy before the roast.
The roast sirloin of beef arrived cooked medium and was beautifully tender. Alongside it, a generously sized Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes with crisp exteriors made this a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday dinner. The potatoes were particularly well judged, cooked through without sacrificing that all-important crunch.
Our side of cauliflower cheese deserved just as much attention. The cauliflower was nicely cooked, with plenty of sauce and a pronounced cheese flavour. It was a highlight of the meal, rather than an afterthought.
The sticky toffee pudding finished things on a high. A light sponge, plenty of toffee sauce and a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream made for an indulgent dessert without a heavy, stodgy texture. It was a lovely finish to three consistently delicious courses.
The restaurant was busy, but the arrangement of the tables preserved a sense of privacy. From our lovely window seat, we could enjoy the buzz of the room while still feeling comfortably tucked into our own space.
Service kept pace with the dining room: each course arrived promptly, and the hot food reached us warm. A good range of beers added to the appeal of settling in for a relaxed Sunday afternoon.
At £35 per person for three courses on our visit, the Sunday menu felt like good value for the quality of the cooking. We spent a further £20 on drinks between us.
For anyone looking for a Sunday roast in Chorlton, The Jane Eyre is an easy recommendation: thoughtful starters, a well-executed roast and a proper pudding, served in a relaxed setting. We'd happily book again—and order the cauliflower cheese.
